スエーデンの地方都市、スンズバル市。現代芸術と演劇のための中心の建設、既存建物との融合、その前に広がる広場をどのように再活性化するかを含めたコンペだった。ここでの提案は、建築を作ることが広場を作ることと同義になるような建築をつくれないかということ。
いくつかの開いた入り江のような形状の屋外劇場が、180度に広がる海に向かって作られ、その切り立った崖が連続する内部が劇場のホワイエ空間になっている。たまねぎの皮のように、海から広場、広場から屋外劇場、そのなかにはホワイエ、劇場の観客席、バックステージという構成になっている。
このコンペでは選外だったが、北欧のコンペは街を作ることと建築を作ること、この２つが一体に考えられており、建築のちからが必要とされる現実がここにはあり、これからもあり続ける気がした。

For this magnificent site in Sundsvall, we propose to create a generous outdoor space formed as natural landscape, for example analogue to beach or a hill. Our proposal for new Arts Centre/Theatre in Sundsvall (ACTS) has an architectural form like a natural eroded cove, which open to several directions.
The edge of the building bends like a cove and rises from the ground with gentle steps. It generates several “unique” Piazzas which are characterized by the form of the building itself.
These piazzas should be capable of serving generous public space as a forecourt to Kultur Magasinet and the new Art Center/ Theatre (ACTS) and commercial areas, especially during the warmer months of the year. Town residents in Sundsvall can profit not only on the foyer and restaurant but also on the upheaved roof enjoying panoramic views.
This natural shaped ACTS could be given a design conductive to meeting and frequentation, at the same time a strong architectural identity. It will become a landmark which relates between town and the riverside, the sea for Sundsvall city.

Sur ce magnifique site de Sundsvall, nous proposons un paysage généreux et naturel : une plage ou une colline, par exemple.
La forme architecturale du nouveau Centre d'Art/Théâtre du Sundsvall (ACTES) est celle d'une crique qui aurait subi l'érosion et s'ouvrirait dans diverses directions. Les parois du bâtiment, comme celles de la crique, se courbent progressivement depuis le sol et créent plusieurs placettes, uniques, issues de la forme-même du bâtiment. Ces places constituent un espace public accueillant, avant-scène du Kultur Magasinet, du nouveau théâtre (ACTES) et des espaces commerciaux, particulièrement appréciée durant la période estivale. Les habitants de la ville Sundsvall profitent non seulement du foyer et du restaurant du théâtre, mais également des terrasses et des vues panoramiques. La forme naturelle du ACTES, tout en proposant une identité architecturale forte invite à la visite et à la rencontre. Elle est une étape entre la ville et la rive, et lie la mer et la ville de Sundsvall.
